Questions specific to the post of Netwwork/Hardware Admin

  • A clien’ts computer has a hard disk that appears to be failing. What steps would you take in resolving this problem.
  • State what common software packages (productivity, mail, server, etc…) you are familiar with. (Be warned if you list a package in your answer you may be asked questions about it in an interview.
  • What is DHCP? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using it in a small office network of 10 computers.
  • What are the advantages of having a router handle the internet connection for an office.
  • Some applications can be set to run as a service (on Windows and Macintosh). What are the advantages of setting an application to run as a service?
  • A hospital wants to install a computer to do the following tasks.
    • act as a mail server
    • monitor internet traffic from each client computer and record traffic volumes from each client
      Would you recommend a Windows or Linux server for this task? For the platform you recommend, explain in a few sentences how this could be set up with regard to what software would need to be used or installed, and how the network would be configured. (You may use a diagram if to illustrate if you want).
  • What is SSL? Does using SSL for email transport between a user’s computer and his/her mail server make their connection secure? Explain what other factors may influence security like this.
  • If an organisation in Tansen has an internet connection that is connected to a router, and they want to allow a particular computer on their network to be controlled over the internet by the Sustainable Networks office in Kathmandu, what issues would they need to consider.
